This is being done with the full approval of the owner of the DUNE copyright, the Herbert Limited Partnership. Anderson, IS continuing to establish the canon of the DUNE universe. Frank Herbert's son, Brian Herbert, writing with Kevin J. "THE DUNE ENCYCLOPEDIA reflects an alternate "DUNE universe" which did not necessarily represent the "canon" created by Frank Herbert. Thus that means that Westwood still had the opportunity to call dibs on creating the first modern RTS prototype based on a licensed IP and while there had been games prior to Dune II that had RTS elements ( Herzog Zwei and Command HQ comes to mind), none would breakthrough and get mainstream appeal unlike what Dune II received. The game was a strictly RPG game that had elements of resource management in it resource management in question being ecology, the mining of the Spice as well as recruiting troops to serve the fallen House Atreides. The "Dune 1" game had been developed simultaneously by a French developer studio called Cryo Interactive. ![]() ![]() Of course, as you probably know, it turned out the Dune 1 game never was cancelled, which we discovered when another milestone submission arrived several months later, and it was finished just slightly ahead of the Westwood game, and since we shipped everything the instant it was ready (or maybe even a little before!!), the adventure game (with minimal strategy elements in it) came out first and Westwood's game became Dune 2 (much to their chagrin - but just think - would they have the cool name Dune 2000 for the remake if that hadn't happened?).
